Mrs. Holland, one of Carthage’s most beloved philanthropists and volunteers, passed away on Friday, March 30, 2007, at her daughter’s home in Fort Worth after an illness.
Evangeline Neal Dennard Holland was born on October 12, 1918 in Carthage, Texas to Buford and Eula Holmes Dennard. She earned her R.N. degree from Baylor School of Nursing in Dallas and then served as the school nurse at Mary-Hardin Baylor from 1939 until 1941. During World War II, Mrs. Holland served as a nurse anesthesiologist with the United States Army Nurse Corps attaining the rank of Captain. After the war, she returned to Carthage, where she became the first school nurse hired by the Carthage Independent School District and she became a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International and its local chapter Epsilon Iota. On June 7, 1950, she married Dr. V.M. Holland, of the Fairplay Community, in a simple family ceremony held at the Jesse Dennard home place in the Snap community. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage, and an active community philanthropist and volunteer who donated her time and energy to many local organizations. Mrs. Holland is preceded in death by her husband of forty years, Dr. V. M. Holland who passed away on October 30, 1990 and her brother James C. Dennard who passed away in September of 2006.

Mrs. Holland is survived by a brother, Dr. Robert Dennard of New York; a sister, Jessie Jo Wedgeworth of Carthage; a son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Deb Holland of Dallas; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Harvey Yamagata of Fort Worth; three grandchildren, Allison Yamagata, Ian Yamagata, and Jordan Holland, all of Fort Worth; and a host of aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends also survive Mrs. Holland.

Serving as honorary pallbearers are Mrs. Holland’s grandchildren Jordan Holland, Ian Yamagata, and Allison Yamagata.

If desired, memorials may be made to the Panola County Historical and Genealogical Association, 213 North Shelby Street, Carthage, Texas 75633.

  3. Eula died in the Spanish Flu outbreak that occurred though out the world as troops returned from WWI: Evangeline never got to know her birth mother. Buford married soon after her death; although she grew up in the Dennard family, she had a strong tie to her Grandmother Holmes and her Holmes relatives, even living in one of the Holmes family houses at 422 West Panola Street raising her children and burying her husband, Dr. V.M. Holland.

  4. From: Linda Sisk "my granddad Edgar Holmes built the house at 422 West Panola for Aunt Anna Lou and Judson Holmes that the Dr. and Mrs. Holland purchased. I think Judson was the Panola county clerk at one time. Evangeline Holland did a lot of Holmes family genealogy work that I am continuing. She made pictures of our great great granddad’s grave in Alabama and placed a marker. Wish I had copies of those pictures now, Holmes Baptist Church, etc. Not quite sure even what town it was in. Wonder if Mary has those? My dad’s name was Wilburn Holmes. Thanks for passing this information along!

  5. Today I removed the "J" and "Castillo" name elements, because research shows that these were simply not the names of my mother's relatives. However, I suspect that you will continue to see them on other sites and family histories. I simply could not verify the information.
